Sunny Saturday weather and classic racing at Brands Hatch. Is there a better combination? No other excuse was needed to take our beautiful black Mercedes SLK 320 for a top-down cruise round the M25 to the Kent circuit for June’s Aston Martin Owners Club race meeting.
As the photos show, it wasn’t just Astons on duty, in fact they were in the minority, but there were some great cars in action and some close slip-sliding racing to enjoy while basking in the sunshine. It even prompted me to enter our own MGB road racer in the Octane magazine track day at Goodwood in August, although I’d be happy to give the entry free-of-charge to any lucky customer who buys the car before then.
The SLK proved the perfect car for the job, the silky 3.2 V6 engine delivering the ideal relaxed open-top summer motoring the 25 degree temperatures suggested, purring along at just 2600 rpm at the legal limit. I’ve adopted it as my daily driver until someone comes to take it away to enjoy themselves. NW
